broadcaster since 1951
"contemporary drama in a rural setting "
communicate info about modern farming
target audience are females , uses matriarchs
everyday listening , multi-strand  narratives , feature more dialogue than action
bbc radio 4 , bbc sound , Spotify , apple podcast
the production is very tight as they only pay each actors for six days and spend two hours filming an entire 13 minute episode , the scrips have to be general as it would apply the more that one subject and storylines are created twice every year , they record every four weeks
the archer is the longest running rural soap opera made in 1951, it has 13 minutes episode who's target audience is adult traditional British women so their focus is on topics like relationships , farming and looking after the household. their driving purpose was to communicate informations about modern farming after the world war II famine. The Archers streams to 5 millions people on BBC radio 4 , BBC sound and Spotify on 7pm everyday the omnibus is on 2pm the following day. The episodes contain multiple up to date storyline which following into other episodes this mades for the viewer to be inclined to streaming The Archer more.

Audience and Industry research

using a cyclical narrative structure , romance and betrayal , emphasis on family , multiple running storylines , having realistic topics

Kirsty miller is the conventional strong female character  she has been in an array of relationships scandals and has been a help to her friend Helen in her relation ship, she has also had a miscarriage.
this appeals to the audience as many people have has relationships issues as-well as miscarriages. she informs the archers audience to continue to be strong even in hardship.

Gavin moss is the ex-step son of Kirsty Miller , he was building a business with his dad Philip and found out that his dad was contributing to slave labour , causing Gavin and his father to go to jail.
the dramatic and deceiving aspect feeds into the opera conventions while educating  about slave labour
and entertaining them with the sheer amount of familial drama

Joy Hoverville is the conventional caring people person, she is always baking a giving to all , but in the episode we are listening to she is ill, this creates empathy to the audience . fitting into the caring conventions of family and close nit communities

the Arches appeals to the female audience through the use of Strong female characters this allows for the female audience to be more confident in themselves

the Archer appeals to the older audience with the vast age ranges this allows for them to feel included and have something to relate to

Audience and uses & Gratification

Explain how the BBC uses different platforms to distribute radio programmes . Refer to The Archers to support your points.

the BBC uses different platforms such as social media to promote and distribute their radio programmes. for example having a "the Archers" account on media it allows for a wider group to educate about the archers and have a larger drive to listen to the Archers.

Another way on social media that they distribute radio is with fan groups and discussions, this is because the audience will think more about the archers and promote it indirectly of new listeners. while also raising money like the free Helen hashtag which raised more than 100k for Refugee.

the way that the BBC distributes radios is with the many form of access the audience has to listening. when looking at the archers you have aVariety of chances to listen and catch up onto the archer. as it is play everyday 7 pm , the same episode is play the following day on 2 pm as-well as being omnibuses on Sunday.  This is  allows for all of listeners to follow the story line at many chances this is because of the Archers 6 million listeners.

whilst you can also access the Archers on the BBC website, this allows for the audience to look more into the storyline of the archers and get a greater understanding of the characters in the 13 minute episodes, there are many sections on their website including podcasts about the latest episode, blogs which interview the actors voiced in The Archers, as-well as the characters which have a deep description of all people in the Archers. This allows for more education and conversation around the archers.

uses and gratification

personal identity relating to character sand location could be similar to yours

information about rural life and the topics talked in

entertainment escape normal life and storylines

social interaction  social media groups

Why might the audiences listen to the Archers , refer to U&G in you answer

Audiences listen tot eh Archers because they can relate to the characters for example a Character who has the same Demographics like you for example Peggy being for the older audiences and Helen being for the middle aged audiences. This links with he personal identity of Uses and Gratification as they can really understand the characters due to the vast array of them in the Archers. Having a relatable character in the Archers would create a more avid target audience and is why there are a large range of middle class elderly women in the Archers. This causes for the target audience to continue listening to the archers To  hear their relatable character.

Another way the personal identity link with the archers is the Locations of a rural area, due to its global listening access, it allows for anyone who lived in a rural area in England to reminisce if in a different location of the world , swell as anyone who lives in a similar location can relate to events and weather showcased in the archers.

further more the Audience could also listen to the archers due to it Entertainment, due to it being a soap opera there is always many different storylines running at once. this allows for many serious and comical topics to be shown and creates for the audience to always gain entrainment when listening as-well as constantly wanting to listen to The Archers.

4. community

Exam question

A.Name the organisation that regulates radio

 Off com regulates radio

B.community is an example of a type of radio in the UK

Give two other examples of Radio types in the UK

 commercial and public service broadcasting

C.Briefly explain the differences between two types of radio.

the difference between the radios of commercial and public service is how they are being funded. commercial is funded by advertising that is played on their radio and they get money so they can broadcast it more efficiently. While Public service is funded by the TV licence fee that is payed by the people who purchase a tv.

 D. Explain why the Archers fits into the BBC remit and the radio that it is classified as

The archers fits into the BBC remit of informing through the use of Mature topics that are mentioned . For example the modern slave labour which can allow for the Listening audience to become informed about the subjects of slave labour and understand it more. This allows for the audience who have never experienced or looked into to slave labour to truly understand the sever topic.

The archers also fits with the Educations portion as from 1951 the archers was to inform audience about how to revive in the rural life when i came to farming , rationing and post war knowledge , while in 2025 The arches as revolutionised to educate the civilisation who live urban in the rural countryside about Farming and the rural life .

the last way the archers fits into the BBC remit is thought the use of entertainment , as when met with dramatics and several running in-depth storylines life the domestic relations ship involving Helen .This is due to the Opera calcification.  Allows for the Listening audience to constantly be engaged in the topics and variety of storyline. This allows for entertainment to create a more avid listener .

This strictly following of the BBC remit allows for the audience to relate to characters and be educated on where to go for support . Specifically when met with the free Helen hashtag found on facebook and twitter. where they could find the information of where to resort to if met with domestic abuse.

Media Audiences

A. Which radio station broadcast the archers

 BBC radio 4

B. Identify on of the audiences for the Archers

middle aged women

C. Explain two ways in which The Archers is aimed at the audience you have identified

They aim at ABC1 women due to the strong female characters which empower women while the subjects are aimed at a more higher classed mind when met with serious and long running storylines.

D. Explain why the audience listen to the Archers . Refer to the uses and gratification theory

The audience would listen tot the Archers because they identity with a certain aspect of it. For example relating to a Character , due to their variety of characters the Audience will most likely feel alike to one of them for example Jill could be relatable due to her age or kindness and likability. This would make the audience vigorously watch The Archers because they identify with Jill and would want to listen to her due to their relatability.

another reason the Audience would listen to the archers is due to social interaction. this is due tot the many fan groups and large audience to talk to , this allows for the Archers audience to be constantly conversing about the archers and build a close nit community similar tot the community showcased in the archers. This allows for more social interaction to be made when it comes to the Archers.
